Fires Break Out at JNU Hostel and DU’s Gwyer Hall Canteen: No Injuries Reported

On Friday, two fires broke out at prominent educational institutions in Delhi, sparking widespread concern among students and faculty. The first incident occurred at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where a fire broke out in the Godavari Hostel, followed by another blaze at Delhi University’s Gwyer Hall. While no injuries were reported in either case, the incidents raised serious questions about the safety infrastructure in these institutions.

The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) expressed strong dissatisfaction with the university’s safety measures, calling for immediate action. Similarly, at Delhi University, students and staff were left alarmed after the fire disrupted two popular canteens, leading to calls for better preventive systems on campus.

Fire at JNU Godavari Hostel: A Closer Look

The fire at JNU’s Godavari Hostel broke out late Friday night, reportedly originating from an air-conditioning unit near the electrical panel board. According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), the incident was reported at 10:18 pm, and one fire tender was dispatched to the scene. The flames were brought under control within 15 minutes, preventing any major damage.

Videos shared by JNUSU showed flames and smoke emanating from the electrical panel, creating a panic-like situation among the students. While no one was injured, the JNU Students’ Union voiced sharp criticism of the university administration.

In a post on X, JNUSU President Dhananjay attributed the incident to “poor safety measures” and accused the administration of neglecting repeated calls for hostel renovations. “The JNU administration and vice chancellor have pushed JNU students into the jaws of death. The fire in Godavari Hostel is proof of this,” he stated. The union also highlighted that the administration frequently cited a lack of government funding as a reason for not addressing safety concerns.

Fire at DU Gwyer Hall Canteen

Earlier that day, a fire broke out at Delhi University’s Gwyer Hall, a historic hostel known for its bustling canteens. The fire began around 10:54 am at the Shri Meenakshi South Indian Café (SMSIC), a popular eatery among students. The blaze quickly spread to a neighboring establishment, Pandit Ji’s Canteen, which is also a favorite spot for students.

The Delhi Fire Services responded promptly, dispatching four fire tenders to the location. According to officials, the fire was brought under control without any injuries or casualties reported. Students and faculty, however, were left shaken by the event, as the canteens play a vital role in the daily lives of residents.

Implications and Safety Concerns

Both incidents have spotlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures in educational institutions. The JNUSU has reiterated its demand for comprehensive hostel renovations, emphasizing that insufficient safety protocols jeopardize student well-being. Similarly, the fire at DU’s Gwyer Hall has underscored the importance of regular safety audits and fire prevention strategies in shared spaces like canteens and hostels.

With fires disrupting two key institutions on the same day, students and stakeholders have called for immediate administrative action to prevent such incidents in the future. Institutions must now prioritize fire safety and infrastructure upgrades to ensure the safety and security of all residents.
