Minister selects 6 universities and 5 medical colleges to establish sports science and medicine departments

Under the NCSSR program, six universities or institutions and five medical schools have been chosen to establish Sports Science and Sports Medicine Departments across the country.

Six universities or institutes and five medical colleges have been chosen across the country to establish Sports Science and Sports Medicine Departments under the NCSSR scheme, based on criteria such as accreditation, permanent faculty, publications/patents, funding requirements, national/international cooperation, and proposal and presentation.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ National Centre of Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) programme seeks to promote high-level research, education, and innovation in the field of top athlete performance.

The programme is divided into two parts: I establishing an NCSSR centre, and (ii) providing support (funding) for the establishment of Sports Sciences and Sports Medicine Departments in chosen universities/institutions and medical colleges, respectively.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and chosen universities, institutions, or medical colleges around the nation implement the scheme’s objectives, and a total of Rs 62.61 crore has been released since the scheme’s commencement. State funds are not sanctioned or distributed. In addition, the plan is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that the program’s goals are met.

This Ministry has adopted research-based selection criteria for elite athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) based on various research inputs such as current performance, past performance, comparative data, global analysis, progression rate, and so on, in addition to the support provided through the NCSSR scheme. Athletes’ performance is also continually assessed in relation to scientifically established standards for their growth.
