Delhi University Constitutes Centre for Himalayan Studies

The new Centre for Himalayan Studies at Delhi University will conduct research and development on all elements of the Himalayas.

NEW DELHI: In cooperation with the University of Ladakh’s Centre for Himalayan and Trans Himalayan Studies, the University of Delhi (DU) has created a new Centre for Himalayan Studies to conduct research and development on all areas of the Himalayas. According to a statement from Delhi University, the university will also establish a Himalayan Museum. Delhi University has created a new Himalayan Centre to help save the Himalayas, which are now in peril. In recent years, landslides, cloud bursts, and unexpected floods have grown more prevalent. 

As a result, individuals living in various Himalayan regions are experiencing difficulties, according to the statement. “Vice Chancellor P C Joshi of the University of Delhi issued a rallying cry to people throughout the country to band together to rescue the Himalayas. Joshi stated, “The University of Delhi is concerned and serious about the Himalayan concerns,” according to a DU release.

DU Himalayan Centre

“We need to conserve and maintain the Himalayan bio-resources as well as the region’s distinctive culture,” said Dinabandhu Sahoo, founder director of the University of Delhi’s Centre for Himalayan Studies. The Himalayan Centre will collaborate with a variety of national and international organisations, as well as people on the ground in several Himalayan states.” An environmentalist named Anil Prakash Joshi spoke about the Himalayan problem in a webinar titled “Himalayan Future: Beyond 2050” to a group of individuals from all around the country. 

Sonam Wangchuk, a Ladakh engineer and pioneer of artificial glaciers, concurred with Anil Joshi, saying that, more than any other army or country, we would have to defend against climate change in the future years. Joshi and Wangchuk praised the university’s efforts to establish a Himalayan studies centre and offered any assistance they could. The Delhi University and the University of Ladakh have inked an agreement.
