DU Launches Flexible Multiple Entry–Exit Scheme for UG Programs Under NEP 2020

DU’s new multiple entry–exit scheme allows students to earn interim qualifications—certificate, diploma, degree, or honours—based on credit milestones and return within seven years to complete their program.

University of Delhi Multiple Entry–Exit Scheme 2025: The University of Delhi has rolled out detailed guidelines for its Multiple Entry–Exit (ME–ME) scheme, aligning its undergraduate programs with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022. This student-centric initiative allows learners to pause and resume their studies at defined milestones, making higher education more adaptable to individual needs.

Under this new framework, DU undergraduates can exit their program after any even semester—earning a certificate, diploma, or degree depending on credits completed—and re-enter within a stipulated period to continue their academic journey without starting over.

How DU’s Multiple Entry–Exit Framework Works

Under the ME–ME scheme, students accrue credits each semester. If a student chooses to exit:

  • After Year 1 (Sem II) with 44 credits, they receive an Undergraduate Certificate.
  • After Year 2 (Sem IV) with 88 credits, they earn an Undergraduate Diploma.
  • After Year 3 (Sem VI) with 132 credits, they qualify for a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • After Year 4 (Sem VIII) with 176 credits, they graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree (Honours/Research/Entrepreneurship).

“The ME–ME scheme empowers students to tailor their academic careers, balancing education with life’s changing demands,” the DU notification states.

Credit Requirements and Exit Qualifications

Each award corresponds to a minimum credit threshold:

  • 44 credits for a Certificate
  • 88 credits for a Diploma
  • 132 credits for a Degree
  • 176 credits for an Honours/Research/Entrepreneurship Degree

Credits remain valid for 2 years for certificates, 3 years for diplomas, and 4 years for degrees. Students must complete any missing credits upon re-entry to achieve their desired qualification.

Re-entry Provisions and Timeline

Students may re-enter the same program within 7 years of exit. Scenarios include:

  • Exiting after Year 1 and returning within 3 years to enter Year 2, then progressing to Year 4 Honours.
  • Exiting after Year 2 and returning within 4 years to complete Years 3 and 4.
  • Exiting after Year 3 and returning within 5 years to finish the fourth year and earn an honours degree.

Re-entry requires application before the next session begins. Mid-session exits are recorded as completed qualifications up to the last full year.

The university will issue lateral entry guidelines later, facilitating credit transfers for students from other institutions.

Students should review the full notification on the DU website and plan exits or re-entries well in advance to ensure seamless progression.
