Smart India Hackathon 2024: The Ministry of Education is set to inaugurate the 7th edition of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) on December 11, 2024. The event will take place at 51 centers nationwide and is part of a broader effort to cultivate a culture of innovation and problem-solving among students.
What Is the Smart India Hackathon?
The Smart India Hackathon is a national initiative aimed at empowering students to address real-world challenges. By providing a platform for young minds to engage with pressing problems, SIH fosters creativity, innovation, and the development of solutions with a tangible societal impact.
Student teams participating in the hackathon can tackle problem statements provided by various ministries, departments, and industries. Additionally, students with original ideas can submit them under the Student Innovation Category, which aligns with any of the 17 themes outlined for the event.
Key Highlights of SIH 2024
For the 2024 edition, over 250 problem statements have been submitted by 54 ministries, departments, state governments, public sector units (PSUs), and industries. These challenges span across sectors critical to national development and priorities, offering diverse opportunities for innovation.
A remarkable 86,000 teams initially participated at the institute level, out of which 49,000 student teams, each comprising six students and two mentors, advanced to the national level. These teams will address challenges across 17 major themes, including:
- Healthcare
- Supply Chain and Logistics
- Smart Technologies
- Heritage and Culture
- Sustainability
- Education and Skill Development
- Water, Agriculture, and Food
- Emerging Technologies
- Disaster Management
The Role of the SIH Alumni Network
A significant factor contributing to the ongoing success of the Smart India Hackathon is the SIH Alumni Network. The network is supported by a well-structured online portal (https://alumni.mic.gov.in/), which has been instrumental in documenting and sharing success stories from previous participants.
To date, SIH alumni have founded over 100 startups, many of which address critical social issues. These success stories serve as inspiration for new participants, demonstrating the transformative potential of ideas incubated through the hackathon.
