In an audio message sent to a friend on April 27, Mangione expressed his intention to “zen out.” At the time, he was hiking in the scenic Nara region of Japan, known for its lush landscapes and traditional villages. “There’s like these tiny little villages here, on the side of the cliffs — I’ll send a photo. It’s super lush, there’s this beautiful river that cuts through the gorge,” he described enthusiastically.
A Desire for Solitude
Mangione shared plans to extend his stay in the Nara region for a month, immersing himself in meditation and writing. Later, while climbing Mount Omine, a sacred and rugged trail in Japan, he sent another message to a friend. He detailed the challenging terrain and remarked on the area’s traditional restrictions, noting that women were not permitted to climb the mountain. “This mountain is peak misogyny… I needed to stop getting distracted by women lol,” he joked in his message.
