NEW DELHI: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated on Wednesday that the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will transform India into a worldwide knowledge centre, with IITs playing a key role.
In a virtual speech at the 71st foundation day event of IIT Kharagpur, he stated that IITs will not only be “centres of study,” but also “centres of nation-building.” “The NEP 2020, which has been in place for a year, is focused at fulfilling the goal of accessibility and equality in education… As more young people want to pursue technical education, we ensure that no one is disadvantaged because of a lack of English proficiency,” Pradhan added.
According to the minister, the NEP 2020 will tear down barriers and revolutionise the way technical education is delivered to eligible applicants. For individuals who do not desire to study in English, the minister stated that several engineering institutions around the country would provide technical education in widely spoken regional languages. He stated that IIT Kharagpur embodies the NEP’s aims and encouraged its administrators to prioritise excellent goals with the larger goal of transforming it from a “Centre of Learning” to a “Centre of Nation Building.”
“We are commemorating the 71st foundation day of IIT Kharagpur,” Pradhan added, noting that India just celebrated its 75th birthday a few days ago. Initially, the IIT was located at 5, Esplanade East in Kolkata, but in 1950, it was relocated to Hijli in the undivided Medinipur district. The current name, ‘Indian Institute of Technology,’ was chosen before Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s ceremonial opening of the institute on August 18, 1951.
While IIT Kharagpur is the oldest IIT in terms of age, it is the youngest in terms of innovative technologies and initiatives, according to Education Secretary Amit Khare, who also spoke remotely at the event. “IIT Kharagpur has completely explored the possibilities of interdisciplinary learning from engineering to business school, law school, and soon a medical science college,” he added.
In response to Khare, IIT Kharagpur Director V K Tewari, who was present in the auditorium on campus where a limited number of people from the institute were present, announced that the institute’s medical college will open in November. Meanwhile, in Santiniketan in Birbhum district, Union Minister of State for Education Dr Subhas Sarkar urged that brain drain from India should be prevented.
“The current state of affairs in our nation is favourable to deserving pupils. Those who have received their education outside of India should return and work in India “At Visva-Bharati University, where he was honoured, Sarkar stated. Later, he informed reporters that the West Bengal administration will have to put the NEP 2020 into action in the next days.
