World Post Day was first observed in 1969 at the United Nations Postal Union (UPU) Congress in Tokyo, Japan.
It was proposed by an Indian team led by Shri Anand Mohan Narula, and World Post Day has been observed ever since to highlight the significance of postal services across the world.
The 192 member countries of the UPU celebrate World Post Day every year to recognise the importance of universal mail and the UPU’s contributions to society and the global economy.
Special stamp exhibits and innovative postal initiatives are held by countries. Every year during the week of October 9, India conducts a week-long festival.
World Post Day: History
Posts date from the 1600s, when postal systems began to emerge in various countries and were widely used. Global postal services were established later in the 1800s. In the year 1874, the Universal Postal Union was founded.
In 1948, the UPU was designated as a UN agency. The first World Postal Day was observed on October 9th, 1969, at the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Anand Narula, a member of the Indian delegation, accepted the proposal, and World Post Day has been observed every year since.
