Every year on October 5, World Teachers’ Day or International Teachers’ Day is celebrated to raise awareness about issues affecting teachers and educators.

It focuses on teacher appreciation, assessment, and necessary adjustments, as well as honouring teachers for their contributions to children.

Since 1994, World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated.

This day is dedicated to honouring, supporting, recognising, and celebrating the nation’s educators.

History Of World Teachers’ Day 2021

In 1994, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated 5 October to be World Teachers’ Day, and it has been observed every year on that day since then.

This day marks the 50th anniversary of the ILO UNESCO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers, which was adopted in 1966.

It was approved in Paris at a special intergovernmental meeting organised by UNESCO in conjunction with the ILO.

“This suggestion sets clearly the rights and duties of teachers, as well as international criteria for their initial preparation and subsequent education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions,” according to UNESCO’s official website.

Following this approval, the UNESCO General Conference in 1997 adopted the UNESCO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel.

Significance Of World Teachers’ Day 2021

The goal of World Teachers’ Day is to recognise, evaluate, and improve the situation of educators all around the world.

This day is also considered as an occasion to think about and solve concerns concerning teachers and education.

Every year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Education International (EI) hold a campaign focused on different themes to promote a better understanding of teachers and their profession, as they play an important role in the development of students and society.

The historical proposal concerns personnel policies in education, recruiting, basic training, and teacher continuing education.

World Teachers’ Day is significant because it is celebrated to highlight progress and focus on ways to address the problems that teachers face.

This day focuses mostly on their job and working circumstances, which are sometimes overlooked.

In the goal of high-quality education, these standards increase teachers’ standing.

Theme of World Teachers’ Day 2021

The theme of World Teachers’ Day 2021 is ‘Teachers at the heart of education recovery’.

According to Unesco, this year, a five-day series of global and regional events will showcase the effect that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the teaching profession, highlight effective and promising policy responses and aim to establish the steps that need to be taken to ensure that teaching personnel develop their full potential.
