What Is the Film About?

Varun (Shivakarthikeyan) is a military doctor. With his girlfriend Padmini, he has a stable love life (Priyanka Arul Mohan). Unfortunately, things did not turn out as they had hoped, and they decided to call it quits. Varun Doctor begins with the break-up of a relationship when it is discovered that Padmini’s younger sister has been kidnapped.

How does Doctor Varun track down the kidnapper and uncover a massive kidnapping ring? What happens to the love storey at the end of the basic plot of the film?

Performances

Shivakarthikeyan’s usual flamboyant and chirpy demeanour is absent. He adopts a more calm, poised, and subtle demeanour, making a conscious effort to avoid his usual demeanour. While the effort is commendable, it does not produce the desired results. When Shivakarthikeyan is trying to be measured and composed, he appears stiff at times.

Analysis

Varun Doctor is Nelson Dilipkumar’s second film after Coco Kokila. This, like the first, is a screenplay-driven film with a very thin plot. The plot revolves around locating and rescuing a kidnapped girl.

Varun Doctor gets back on track after the kidnapping angle is revealed, after a rather ordinary start. From there, the real fun and drama begin. In many ways, it resembles the director’s first film. The problem is serious; the entire family is involved, resulting in unexpectedly funny situations. While all of this is going on, the lead is still very serious.

The screenplay is crucial in this case. The plot is a mix of comedy and investigative thriller elements. The first neatly blends the clues to track down the kidnapper with the fun happening around it. A couple of blocks are particularly amusing. They’ll undoubtedly leave the audience speechless. They are, in the end, what make the first half of the film watchable.

Nelson Dilipkumar, on the other hand, runs out of steam in the second half. Things take a much more serious turn after the intermission. The enjoyment has vanished. However, as a result of it, a more serious issue arises. While the ‘comedy’ saves and improves the first half, it does so at the expense of genuine emotions. There is no emotional link between the kidnapped girl and her family.

The emotions that have been built up in the second half then come across as contrived and overdone. Everything else, on the other hand, follows a predictable pattern. The second half is weak and uninteresting as a result of this combination. The climax features a mix of hilarity and heroism, highlighting the tonal inconsistency even more.

Varun Doctor works in the first half because of the comedy, but it falls short in the second half when it matters most. It’s a below-average film because of the contrived and clichéd plot.

Others?

Priyanka Arul Mohan is the heroine who bears her name. She has a song at the beginning but then has nothing to do. She’s a member of the family gang, but that’s all there is to it.

Yogi Babu’s comic timing shines once more, and he provides a welcome break from the storey. The two scenes with him (and Redin Kingsley) are among the best in the film. In his debut, Nelson Dilipkumar had cast him in a memorable role as a well. He also does it here.

Among the rest, Vinay Rai, best known for his role in Detective, does a decent job as a baddie. However, he doesn’t have as much freedom here. He does, however, maintain the necessary seriousness and threat to keep the storey moving. Raghu Ram and Milind Soman could have been used more effectively. Even though there isn’t much to do, the rest of the cast is adequate.

Music and Other Departments?

Anirudh’s music is adequate. Only one song is typical of his style. As expected, he delivers on the background score. The majority of it is good, with a few exceptions. Vijay Karthik Kannan’s cinematography is excellent. It adds to the slick look and feel, along with the editing. The writing is a bit of a mishmash.
