The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has made a big statement, allowing students to take lateral entrance into other fields of engineering. The AICTE stated in a letter to all Vice Chancellors of technical universities, directors/principals of AICTE recognised institutes, that it has been getting requests from students seeking admission to BTech as a lateral entry degree in addition to the one previously obtained.
The AICTE executive committee was presented with such a proposal during its 144th meeting on July 13, 2021. The executive committee believes that technical colleges may make it easier for such individuals to enter into BTech/BE programmes by enabling them to enrol in a BTech programme in another discipline/branch of engineering at the appropriate level.
Because there includes a practical component, students will be needed to enroll as normal students in an institution/college, and the relevant university will assure this and establish the appropriate arrangements in its laws.
The committee also agreed to extend the time it takes to complete an extra degree from two to three years without compromising the credit requirements in core disciplines or the new program’s learning goals.
The AICTE circular stated, “The Executive Committee granted the exemption from pursuing courses previously completed in the first discipline of the BTech degree, and such students would be suitably led to complete other requirements of the second disciplinary.”
The AICTE further requested that schools make required revisions to their statutes and make suitable judgments in this respect in a circular dated August 9, 2021.
