The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Education Ministry rated IISc in Bengaluru first among research institutes in the country. However, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras was ranked first in the overall NIRF rankings, while JNU was ranked ninth. The institution fell one position to ninth place in the overall rankings.
