Indian Administrative Service Vacant Posts 2024: In a recent statement shared in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Jitendra Singh revealed the current vacancy status in the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS). As of January 1, 2024, over 1,300 IAS positions and more than 500 IPS vacancies remain unfilled. This information sheds light on the pressing need for new recruits to fill these critical roles within India’s civil services.
Vacant Posts in IAS and IPS
According to the details provided by the Minister, the total sanctioned strength of IAS officers is 6,858, with only 5,542 officers currently in position. This leaves a vacancy of 1,316 posts. Out of these, 794 are designated for direct recruits, while 522 are promotion posts for current civil servants.
In the IPS, there is a sanctioned strength of 5,055 officers, with only 4,469 officers serving. This results in 586 vacant IPS posts, out of which 209 are for direct recruitment and 377 for promotions.
Vacancy in Indian Forest Service (IFS)
In addition to the IAS and IPS vacancies, the Indian Forest Service (IFS) also faces a shortage of officers. The total sanctioned strength of IFS officers is 3,193, with 2,151 officers currently in position. This leaves 1,042 vacant posts in the IFS, of which 503 are meant for direct recruits and 539 for promotions.
Recruitment and Appointments in the Last Five Years
The Union Minister also provided insights into the recruitment and appointments made in the IAS, IPS, and IFS over the last five years. During the 2022 Civil Services Examination (CSE), the following appointments were made:
- In the IAS, 75 General category, 45 OBC, 29 SC, and 13 ST candidates were appointed.
- In the IPS, 83 General, 53 OBC, 31 SC, and 13 ST candidates were appointed.
- For the IFS, 43 General, 51 OBC, 22 SC, and 11 ST candidates were selected.
These figures reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to fill vacancies and promote diversity across the civil services.
UPSC Civil Services Examination
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) annually to select eligible candidates for the IAS, IPS, and IFS. This highly competitive examination is crucial in ensuring that the country has the necessary cadre of trained and qualified officers to serve in various administrative and policing roles.
