Minister of Punjab School Education and Public Works Vijay Inder Singla announced on Friday that the state government has decided to name roads and schools after Olympic medalists.
Mr. Singla congratulated the Indian men’s hockey team on winning an Olympic (bronze) medal for the first time in 41 years, saying the players have made the country proud and that naming roads and schools after them would be a small gesture of gratitude.
Mr. Singla said in an official statement that Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has approved the proposal and that officials have been directed to begin the process as soon as possible.
He stated that a road connecting the medal-winning player’s home and school will be named after them in order to inspire young people.
Mr. Singla stated that Punjab has made a significant contribution to Indian sports.
Mr. Singla said the state has sent a contingent of 20 athletes to the Olympics.
Punjab had 11 players in the men’s hockey squad, including captain Manpreet Singh and his deputy Harmanpreet Singh.
Mr. Singla added that the women’s team did well in the Tokyo Olympics.
