How To Know Your Current Location Using Google Maps

How to find where you currently are in Google Maps? Google Maps is fantastic for finding routes to far-flung towns and unusual retail centres.

But what if you open it just to find out that you have no idea where you are?

That isn’t an issue. A “Current Location” button is included in every version of Google Maps.

When you tap this, the map will zoom in to your exact position, within a few hundred feet.

Here’s how to use a computer or a phone to locate your current location in Google Maps.

How to find where you are in Google Maps

Make sure your device is connected to the internet before you begin. Even if you’ve downloaded any offline maps, Google Maps will require internet connectivity to locate your position.

1. Allow the map to load in Google Maps on your PC or smartphone.

2. If the app does not immediately centre on your location, click or press the Current Location button in the bottom-right corner. It will appear as a “bullseye” on the website and Android app, and as an “arrow” in the iPhone app.

3. Your browser or phone might ask you to give Google Maps permission to see your location. Allow it.

4. Your location will be highlighted on the map. The dark blue circle indicates where Google Maps believes you are now, while the transparent blue circle surrounding it indicates where you may be.

The more accurate Google Maps is about your location, the narrower the transparent range will be. If Google Maps can’t find you, it’s likely because you need a stronger mobile connection or quicker internet.

A quick tip: Compass mode is activated by touching the Current Location button twice on the iPhone and Android apps. The map will rotate to reflect the direction you’re facing in real life as the app centres on your position.
